EuroGIX history
Up to now, there only exists operational GIX's in France, in Paris and in the Paris region. Various regional initiatives were
born over the last years (Grenoble, Lyon, Marseilles, Nancy), but none were really successful, mainly because the operators
and large users were reluctant to adhere to such a system.
However, on the initiative of the ARIA (Association of Internet networks of Alsace), association founded and chaired by Christophe
Megel, president of Actimage, the project of a trans-border and European GIX was born to lead to the
inauguration, March 4, 2002, of EuroGIX: first regional Internet interconnection node in France.
Up to now, already
15 regional Internet actors showed their interest in the project by prepairing physical connections to EuroGIX, located
in Strasbourg. The exceptional situation of Alsace, geographical and economical, makes this project an obvious success in
the medium term.
